Job Description:
Position Summary The Part-Time Firefighter/Advanced Emergency
Medical Technician serves the community by responding to a wide
variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately
threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for
information or assistance. The successful candidate performs within
the scope of the policies and procedures of Smithfield Fire & EMS
and in the following general categories: fire suppression,
emergency medical aid, rescue or ambulance, hazardous material
responses, training, building inspections and public education. The
successful candidate must function effectively as part of a highly
trained team under adverse conditions and physical conditions that
may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous
conditions or infectious diseases. The successful candidate is
required to attend regularly scheduled training to maintain the
high level of knowledge, skill, and ability necessary to function
safely and effectively as a firefighter and EMS provider in
accordance with state law, county protocols, and standard operating
procedures. The work performance of a successful candidate is
continuously evaluated for general knowledge, skill proficiency,
and ability to work as part of a team. Receives direction from the
captain, or other chief officers. Responsibilities and Duties
Drives or rides an emergency vehicle in response to fire, rescue
and emergency medical events, hazardous materials
response/mitigation and routine requests for help or assistance.
Places equipment, lays and connects hose Operates high-capacity
pumps and directs water streams Raises and climbs ladders Uses
chemical extinguishers, safety belts, lines and hooks and uses
self-contained breathing apparatus. May enter burning buildings as
part of a fire suppression team, perform ventilation tasks above
ground, carry heavy objects and equipment and rescue injured or
trapped victims. Participates in fire prevention programs including
public education events and fire code enforcement inspections.
Responds to requests for emergency medical care and evaluates
patient's condition and/or injuries and administers aid and
interventions as per protocol Monitors patient's vital signs,
administering medications, establishing, and maintaining adequate
airways, controlling bleeding, and splinting broken bones and
provides advanced life support at the scene and during transported
to hospital. Performs daily preventative inspection and maintenance
on the station and its contents, various fire apparatus, equipment,
ambulances, and EMS equipment Cleans exterior and interior of
vehicle Assures fire apparatus and ambulances are properly stocked
with necessary supplies Apprises supervisor as needed to purchase
replacement materials or schedule complex repairs. Performs duties
as assigned. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND
CERTIFICATIONS High school diploma or high school equivalent (i.e.
GED). Must have a good driving record, possess, and maintain a
valid driver’s license. Must pass a fire department physical
examination and physical agility test. Must pass background check
and drug screen. Current Firefighter 1 & 2 Certifications from the
Utah Fire Rescue Academy. Current Advanced EMT NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of: Modern fire service principles,
procedures, techniques, and equipment. Fire protection systems,
evacuation considerations, and building construction regulations
for fire safety. Personal computers along with Windows, Word,
presentation software, and spreadsheet and database management
software. Skills: Communicate effectively, both orally and in
writing; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written
instructions using the English language. Abilities: Maintain
physical conditioning necessary to perform efficiently in emergency
situations; meet medical and physical agility standards as
established. Participate in training drills; attend school and
classes on firefighting, hydraulics, first aid and emergency
medicine, fire equipment, and apparatus, and other classes
associated with recognized firefighter and EMS standards. Learn and
apply technical information pertaining to fire fighting. Assist in
performing protective inspections of structures and businesses in
the community for fire hazards and pre-incident surveys for
tactical planning. Assist in conducting fire-safety education
classes. Analyze and cope with a variety of emergency situations
calmly but effectively and to react quickly to secure accurate and
precise information on the location, extent, and nature of fires
and emergency aid requests. Sustain heavy physical labor during
periods of intense activity in emergency situations; to work at
varying heights above grade. To work odd hours, daytime, nights,
weekends, holidays; must be willing to work in unfavorable work
conditions including snowstorms, heat, cold, rain and wind. Work
within a paramilitary organization and respond readily to
directives. Establish and maintain effective working relationships
with co-workers, supervisors, and the public; to work effectively
as a team member. Perform necessary maintenance, testing and care
of fire hoses, trucks, ladders, and auxiliary equipment and
apparatus. Maintain necessary records and reports, incident forms,
and daily shift operation logs, to accommodate needs of the
Department including computer data entry. Physical Demands/Work
Environment Must be able to: Frequently lift/carry a variety of
fire equipment and occasionally move injured persons (requires
upper body strength as needed to drag, move, or place heavy
objects, such as smoke ejectors, victims, charged hose lines, etc.)
Prolonged, rigorous physical activity during emergency situations
Climb and balance on ladders Stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl Reach
for handle tools and equipment Feel objects for temperature, shape,
and other characteristics Use fingers to make minute adjustments,
tie knots, etc. Listen for specific sounds during emergency
Demonstrate normal vision and color recognition The work
environment characteristics described here are representative of
those an employee encounters while performing the essential
functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made

functions. Physical hazard from fire, equipment, traffic, smoke
inhalation, and falling objects at emergency scenes, and exposure
to health risks may occur. Performance of hazardous tasks under
emergency conditions may require strenuous exertion under such
handicaps as limited visibility, exposure to hazardous or toxic
chemicals and gases, extremes in temperatures, cramped
surroundings, and contact with death, emotional stress, contagious
diseases, and terminal illness. The successful candidate will
respond to fire, emergency medical and hospital inter-facility
transfer calls, and provide train to the public and other emergency
responders. Performs a variety of working level Firefighter/
Advanced EMT duties at a fire and ambulance station. Inspects,
maintains, and repairs all department fire and EMS vehicles,
supplies and equipment, maintains building and grounds. Works with
other full time and part time fire department and ambulance
personnel. The duties listed above are intended only as
